I chose a real region and people as the foundation for each of my fictional lands and folk. I usually describe scenes in the beginning then concentrate on the characters. I only describe flora and fauna and such if it's essential to the mood or moves the story along. I'm more of the latter. My initial research is usually on the event I want to hook my WIP on and then the setting. After that I outline and do the first draft which usually comes to half the full WC. More research can then follow on questions that cropped up. <br /><br />Generally though, I prefer not to overburden my stories with descriptions and details, just enough to put the reader in it.
